Your family is stunning, you know this, that's part of the reason you ordered wall art to compliment how beautiful they are. So now that you ordered this stunning art what are you to do? Soon your images will arrive and you are faced with the task of hanging these prized possessions in an area of distinction in your home. But how on earth are you going to do that you ask yourself. This can seem very daunting especially if you invested in a wall gallery that has multiple pieces and is designed to be hung a certain way.
Know where you want your family wall art
Knowing where you want your family wall art can save you a lot of time and frustration. Before hanging your family gallery, take some time to plan where you want your art to go. Do you want it in the living room or the hallway? What kind of space do you have available? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you determine the size and layout of your gallery. It's also important to consider the lighting in the room and whether the wall you've chosen has enough natural or artificial light to showcase your art properly. Once you've chosen the location, take measurements of the wall and the available space. This will help you choose the appropriate size and number of frames for your gallery. Knowing where you want your family wall art can make the hanging process much smoother and ensure that your memories are displayed in the best possible way. Create a template of your family wall gallery before you hang it
One of the easiest ways to plan out a family wall gallery is by laying down the images on the ground before you put them on the wall. This way, you can experiment with different layouts and move the pictures around until you're happy with the arrangement. You’ll use large sheets of builders, butcher, kraft, or gift wrap paper to lay them out and ensure everything is evenly spaced and the layout is correct.
If you're struggling with the layout of your family wall gallery, you can refer to your photographer’s suggested layout.
It's important to ensure that everything is evenly spaced when creating your template for your family wall gallery. One inch apart is a good measurement since rulers are typically an inch thick. Using a regular standard ruler will ensure accuracy and help you achieve a balanced look.
Once you've determined the spacing, place your frames on the piece of paper and make sure everything is evenly spaced. Then, draw an outline around the frames to create a template for hanging your pictures. Having a friend hold the frames down while you draw the outlines may be helpful to prevent them from shifting.
How to hang your family art on your wall
Once you have planned out the layout for your family wall gallery, it's time to start hanging the frames. You’ll take your traced piece of paper and tape it to the wall. This way, you can easily nail the holes where the frames should go.
Watch this video, 7 CLEVER Picture Hanging Tricks Everyone Should Know, for some ways to mark where a nail hole goes. You can skip to the time stamp 7:23 here to see how to mark your nail holes on your paper template.
After nailing the holes, remove the paper from the wall and begin hanging your frames where the nail holes are. Make sure to check that each frame is level, and adjust as needed. The following video is extremely helpful in demonstrating how to do what is described in this blog post. You can watch that video here How to Hang Pictures Evenly (In Half The Time!).
If you have kids or live in an area that's prone to shaking, it's important to take extra precautions when hanging your family wall art. One great option is to use museum wax or quake putty to anchor your frames to the wall. These products can prevent your art from falling down in case of shaking or jumping kids. When applying the putty, make sure to do it on the bottom part of the frame and ensure that it's level before pushing it into the wall. This will keep your images from shifting or coming out crooked. If you need to remove the frames, be sure to use fishing line to slice off the putty instead of yanking it off, which can damage the wall. Adding this extra level of protection not only keeps your artwork safe but also ensures your family's safety.
